If you’re looking for a snazzy small business seo guide to improve your site’s rankings on the search engines, then you’ve landed on the right page.
For the non techy, this can be seen as intimidating, but I break it down to the least common denominator and make it easier to understand and implement in this post.
I’m going to start this post out with the basics of finding a domain, social media, then move on to content, citations, and links.
Grab a beer, turn off Netflix, and snatch your reading glasses because this is going to blow your mind.
Domains can be a crucial part of your rankings on Google. You can either go for your own branding, or you can go for something like “Austincarpetcleaners.com”
If you’re just starting out, I highly recommend “city+service” type of domain. Why? Because that’s an exact match key phrase for what people are already searching for.
If your company isn’t well known yet in your city, it’s better to go for the city or county in your domain.
Not expensive at all!
Rule of thumb- go for a .com first, then .net or .org. This won’t make a huge difference in your organic rankings, but .coms are way more recognizable and seem more legitimate.
Also, avoid using numbers and hyphens and avoid .biz .info and other ones of that sort.

Have your address placed on the home page of your site EXACTLY as it appears on your Google Places Page.
If you don’t yet have a Google Places page, you’re missing out, but here’s how you do it!
Go to Google Places now…
Fill out all your information before you click on Verify!
Before you have them send you a postcard, you need to have all your information filled in as I explained above. If your info isn’t filled in, your postcard might not come
in the mail and your account may be marked as spam. It’s a huge pain in the ass, because I’ve had it happen to me once.
If they want 5 pictures, put in ten. Make your description at least 500 words and don’t copy and paste it from
Do the same for Bing. Both companies will send you a post card in the mail.
Now, there are hundreds, even thousands of other directory listings that you can use to list your business. Whitespark.ca is a great service for this because you
see where your competition is placing their listings as well as how many listings they have. top competitors in your niche usually have a range of 80-140 listings.
This is where it gets really tedious because you’ll have to fill out several profiles for your listings. White spark will do it for $4 a listing, or you can hire some one
on Fiverr to do it for $5-$20. Remember, you get what you pay for. Also each directory listing counts as a back link.
Noted directory listings are Yelp, Yellow Pages, Four Square, City Search, and Manta.
Getting other powerful back links
You’ll hear people say back links are bad and Google hates them, and you’ll hear that back links are a high contributing factor that helps websites with rankings.
Well I’m here to tell you that bad back links are bad, and good back links are great.
Before you shut your lap top, allow me to elaborate.
Once upon a time people could generate a ton of back links using software and send these links to their websites and before you know it, the website would get ranked for the
keywords they were targeting. This caused a lot of questionable sites to get ranked, and Google quickly caught on to this.
They changed their algorithm, or rules, of how and why websites would get ranked.
Their number one reason a site would be ranked if because of fresh, unique, wonderful content that people want to spread on social media.
Although this is very true, they left out something very important.
Content IS king, but links are the energy source that powers the site.
The key is to get links from powerful authority sites that are in your niche!
Get a link from doing a guest post.
Going back to the carpet cleaning example….
Think about other companies such as maid services, rug depots, furniture stores or anything cleanable or clean related that isn’t carpet cleaning itself.
You can actually reach out to the best maid services in your city (the ones that are already on the first page of Google) and ask to write a guest post on their website’s
blog. Being a carpet cleaner, you’re basically talking about cleaning for peoples health… its not too different from a maid service who doing the same thing!
Send them an email and be like “Hi my name is Joe and I am the owner of the best carpet cleaner in Richmond. I wanted to reach out to you and ask if I could write a guest
post on your blog, for free! The only thing I ask in return is a link to my website. I can post the blog post on my social media accounts, and so can you. Would you like
to work together on this?”
Of course, write the article first before you start sending emails or calling these people. It’s good to show an example of your piece of content.
Be creative. You don’t just have to reach out to other cleaning companies, you could reach out to plumbers… water damage? carpet? mold… see…?
That’s one way to get some powerful back links to your website, there is also another way of getting some crazy powerful links to your site without having to email a bunch
of other business owners.
These are called Private Blog Networks.
This is a very complicated way of creating powerful back links to your site by purchasing expired domains. This is huge for small business SEO purposes.
I’m not going to go into too much detail and I’ll probably just save it for another post.
But for starters, you can find domains that used to be powerful websites that are now on sale because the owner just stopped “doing the website.”
Some of these domains are businesses or blogs that the owners just gave up on. The reason doesn’t matter lol.
You can check on majestic to find the metrics of the site and see all the back links that are still pointing to it.
Rule of thumb is to find a domain that has a Trust Flow and a Citation Flow of 15 or above.
After you find the domain, you can rebuild it and produce content and send a link to your site.
One link from a PBN can be way more effective then thousands of links from article hubs.
5-10 PBN links can be all it takes to ranked on the first page of Google depending on your city and competition.
So there you have it, folks. Use this guide to help better your site’s rankings. You might be the best service provider in your niche, but no one is going to know it if they can’t find you!
Leave a comment and share this if you know some one who is struggling to get their business rollin’.
Let me know if you want me to take a look at your site and how we can make it better.
